Tsum valley trek overview:
The Tsum Valley is a remote and hidden valley located in northern Gorkha, Nepal. It is a land of ancient art, culture, and religion, and its people trace their origins to Tibet. The valley is home to several monasteries, including the Rachen and Mu Gompas, and is rich in biodiversity. The trek to the Tsum Valley is a moderate-difficult hike that offers stunning views of the Ganesh Himal, Shringi Himal, and Boudha Himal mountains.
The trek begins with a scenic drive to Arughat, followed by Soti Khola. From Soti Khola, the trail follows the Budhi Gandaki valley upstream, passing through forests of rhododendron and pine trees. The first stop is the village of Lokpa, the gateway to the Tsum Valley.
From Lokpa, the trail continues north to Chumling, home to three famous monasteries. The next day, the trail heads to Chhokangparo, past Domje village, the largest in the Tsum Valley. As the trail ascends, the sub-tropical forests give way to alpine pastures and high mountain deserts.
The trail then passes Milarepa Prien Phu Cave, the most sacred cave in the region, and then Phurbe to reach the Nile. After spending a night at the Nile, the trail continues north to Mu Gompa, the northernmost point of the trek.
From Mu Gompa, the trail returns to the south, passing Rachen Gompa and Domje. The trail then heads to Ganesh Himal Base Camp (4,800m) before returning to Lokpa and Arughat. From Arughat, a local bus takes hikers back to Kathmandu.
