The Gokyo Ri Trek is a peaceful and stunning journey through Nepal’s majestic Himalayas. Standing at 5,357 meters (17,575 feet), the Gokyo Ri summit gives a jaw-dropping view of Everest and nearby giants. The trail leads through quiet Sherpa villages and the beautiful Gokyo Valley, where the deep blue Gokyo Lakes reflect the sky. These lakes are considered sacred by locals and offer a calm, spiritual feel that’s hard to find on busier routes.
The history of the Gokyo Ri area goes back to the early days of Himalayan exploration. During the famous 1953 Mount Everest expedition, Sir Edmund Hillary and his team explored this region while preparing for their summit attempt. Since then, the Gokyo Lakes Trek has become a favorite for those looking for a less crowded path to see Everest from Gokyo Ri. Whether you choose just the Gokyo route or combine it with the Everest Base Camp via the Gokyo Ri trail, you’re walking through a place full of adventure, history, and heart.

During the trek, accommodation is in local teahouses and basic mountain lodges found along the trekking route. Rooms are simple, usually with twin beds with blankets. Facilities get more basic as you gain altitude, especially near Cho La Pass and Gokyo Ri. Food is hot, hearty, and carb-heavy to keep your energy up. Common meals include dal bhat, noodles, soups, pancakes, and momo.
Choosing the right season is key to enjoying the Gokyo Ri Trek. It is best done during seasons that offer clear skies and stable conditions. Here’s a breakdown of what each season brings:
Best time for clear views and safe trails.
Moderate temperatures and blooming wildflowers.
The most popular and safest time for the Gokyo Ri summit hike.
Post-monsoon skies offer sharp mountain views.
Trails are dry, and conditions are excellent.
Great for photographers and first-time trekkers.
Heavy rain, landslides, and cloudy skies.
Dangerous trail conditions and frequent flight cancellations.
Best to avoid this season for trekking.
Cold temperatures and heavy snowfall.
Empty trails but high risks of frostbite and trail closures.
Suitable only for experienced trekkers with proper gear.
There are six Gokyo Lakes in total, located in the Gokyo Valley within Sagarmatha National Park. These lakes are part of the world's highest freshwater lake system, located at an altitude of around 4,700 to 5,000 meters.
Some details about each of the six Gokyo Lakes are:
Longponga
Longponga Lake sits at an altitude of 4,650 meters and is the first lake visitors see on the Gokyo trek.
Taboche Tsho
Located at 4,710 meters, Taboche Tsho is the second lake, larger and deeper than Longponga.
Gokyo Cho / Dudh Pokhari
At 4,790 meters, Gokyo Cho, also known as Dudh Pokhari, is the third and most significant lake of the six.
Thonak Tsho
Thonak Tsho, the fourth lake, lies at 4,870 meters and is the largest by surface area in the Gokyo group.
Ngozumpa Tsho
The fifth lake, Ngozumpa Tsho, is near Nepal’s largest glacier and is situated at 4,980 meters.
Gyazumpa Tsho
At 5,000 meters, Gyazumpa Tsho is the sixth and highest lake, found in the upper reaches of the valley.
Gokyo Valley is unique in its stunning combination of natural beauty, cultural significance, and serene trekking experience.
The valley is home to the world’s highest freshwater lake system, the beautiful Gokyo Lakes, surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks.
The massive Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in Nepal, adds a dramatic element to the breathtaking alpine scenery.
Unlike the crowded Everest Base Camp trek, the Gokyo Valley offers a peaceful and less crowded trekking experience with equally stunning views.
From high viewpoints like Gokyo Ri, trekkers can witness panoramic views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.
The Gokyo Lakes are considered sacred by Hindus and Buddhists, attracting pilgrims during the annual Janai Purnima festival.
The valley supports a unique high-altitude ecosystem, with rare species like snow leopards, Himalayan thar, and other alpine wildlife.
Reaching the Gokyo Ri summit is an unforgettable adventure. The trail takes you through rugged mountain paths, charming Sherpa villages, and peaceful stretches where you might spot Himalayan wildlife. Along the way, you’re surrounded by the natural beauty of the Gokyo Lakes, shimmering in shades of turquoise, and the stunning backdrop of towering peaks.
Standing at 5,357 meters, the Gokyo Ri summit offers one of the best panoramic views in the Everest region. From the top, you can see a breathtaking sweep of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and even distant peaks like Nuptse. Below, the vast Ngozumpa Glacier spreads across the valley, while the series of Gokyo Lakes shines in the sunlight. It’s a truly awe-inspiring moment with a 360-degree Himalayan spectacle that rewards every step of the journey.
Excludes
The Gokyo Ri Trek is considered a moderate to challenging trek, mainly due to its high altitude and steep ascents. While the Gokyo Ri altitude is not highly challenging, the gradual gain in elevation and thin air make it physically demanding, especially as you approach the Gokyo Ri summit at 5,357 meters. Trekkers should be prepared to hike 6–8 hours a day on rugged terrain, often at elevations above 4,000 meters
This Gokyo Ri Trek is suitable for trekkers with a good fitness level; prior hiking experience at altitude is recommended but not mandatory. With proper acclimatization and a steady pace, even determined beginners can successfully complete the trek.
Gokyo Lakes Trek is ideal for those who want to experience Himalayan beauty, glacial lakes, and panoramic mountain views, but prefer a quieter alternative to the Everest Base Camp trek. It’s perfect for nature lovers, adventure enthusiasts, and those interested in both scenic landscapes and Sherpa culture.
The Everest Gokyo Trek reaches altitudes over 5,000m, making altitude sickness a real concern. Symptoms include headache, nausea, fatigue, and dizziness; you shouldn’t ignore them.
Follow a gradual EBC Gokyo trek itinerary with rest days (especially in Namche and Gokyo).
Hike high, sleep low.
Drink 3 to 4 liters of water daily.
Avoid alcohol and smoking.
Rest or descend if symptoms worsen.
Proper acclimatization is key for a safe and successful Gokyo Lakes and Cho La Pass Trek. Don’t rush, listen to your body.

I first used Mohan's services back in 2022. I then returned to Nepal the following year in 23 and most recently this year I spent June-August in Pokhara. Mohan is a very jovial, friendly laid back fellow and first time we met we had an instant connection. He's mostly helped me with transport to and from Pokhara & Kathmandu, but also most recently I used one of his fine jeeps to take me to Muktinath. Also his drivers are very experienced lovely people so the journeys have been great!.
His prices are very competitive, and he's given me some nice discounts over the years so I'm grateful for that. Also whenever I've had to change my plans last minute he's been extremely flexible in accommodating my needs. I consider Mohan a friend and will continue to use his services in my future travels to Nepal.
I'd highly recommend anyone to use Mohan, whether it be for trekking or taxi services, he's well established & connected and always has a can do attitude with a smile.
Cheers Mohan 👋 😊

Great experience. Mohan helped us organise a great 7-day trek, helped also with transport to Pokhara and always answered our questions. The communication was very good and clear. Our trek was fully organised, our guide really friendly and we enjoyed every minute of it. The price was also good.

Outstanding service across multiple offerings! I initially contacted for a solo trek, which was the highlight of my trip. Hi Nepal demonstrated prompt dropoff/pickup, excellent trek guide tailored to my needs, and overall just a great experience. All with only 12 hours notice!
After some travel issues I experienced with my airplane, Hi Nepal also worked with me on a taxi all the way to Kathmandu which removed the anxiety from my situation entirely. I was picked up promptly at the time I requested, and the company stayed in contact with me to ensure all went perfectly.
10/10 - will be using them again for my next trip in Nepal!
