Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek: 21-Day Ultimate Itinerary
21 Days
Hard
Kathmandu/Kathmandu
Spring (April-May) and Autumn (October-November)
Private Car/Jeep/Flight
Teahouses/Lodges
Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project (KCAP) permit, Restricted Area Permit (RAP), and TIMS Card
The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is among Nepal's most rugged and remote long-distance treks, circling the breathtaking Kanchenjunga Himal, the third-tallest mountain in the world at 8,586 meters. Located in the isolated far-east region of Nepal, the 21-day trek features a fabulous mix of remoteness, harsh alpine terrain, virgin scenery, profuse diversity, and undisturbed Himalayan culture.
Starting and finishing in Kathmandu, this journey takes you through subtropical valleys, dense rhododendron and bamboo forests, high alpine meadows, and eventually to the breathtaking North Base Camp and South Base Camp of Kanchenjunga. Unlike more developed treks like EBC or ABC, the Kanchenjunga Circuit remains relatively untainted and off-the-beaten-path, which will suit experienced trekkers seeking solitude and authenticity.
Trekkers can experience living in common Limbu, Rai, Sherpa, and Tibetan-origin villages where hospitality, monasteries, and traditional cultural rites are deeply rooted. The trek also offers very good opportunities for viewing occasional wildlife such as the Red Panda, Snow Leopard, and different Himalayan bird species and pheasants within the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area.

Kanchenjunga Treks is a moderate trekking route that does not require much gear. But there are a couple of things that you should carry on the trek.
Head
Body
Footwear
Essentials/Equipment
Spring is considered to be one of the best times to visit Nepal for trekking. Whatever trek you are planning in Nepal, spring is the most ideal time for that. During this season, the weather is clear, offering a clear vista of mountains and lush hills and the temperature is moderate.
Weather: Dry and stable with clear weather.
Temperature: Mild at lower elevations, cold in high camps (~-10°C at night).
Highlights:
Rhododendrons and other wildflowers in full bloom.
Excellent mountain views of Kanchenjunga and the surrounding peaks.
Good photography and high passes (if doing the North route or circuit).
Autumn is another ideal time to trek the Kanchenjunga Circuit. Like spring, autumn also offers a clear mountain view with a moderate climate.
Weather: Post-monsoon clarity and dry days.
Temperature: Pleasant in lower altitudes; biting and chilly in higher altitudes.
Highlights:
Glittering landscapes of white-capped peaks.
Ideal trail conditions with minimal rainfall.
Superb visibility for distant panoramas and Kanchenjunga Base Camp outings.
Least favourable, compared to spring and autumn, winter is only for the experienced trekkers. Due to extreme cold and trails filled with snow, the Kanchenjunga Circuit trek during winter is very challenging yet most rewarding.
Not recommended for beginners to trek in winter.
Conditions: Very cold and usually snowy above 3,500 m.
Hazards: Snowy trails, shut-down teahouses, and high-pass sections are inaccessible.
Only for Seasoned trekkers with appropriate equipment and a support team.
Monsoon or summer, however, is not recommended for trekking. As these months are rainy continuously, the trail becomes slippery, and the risk of floods and landslides is high. Moreover, the route becomes filled with leeches. The majority of accommodations are closed as well, making the trek even difficult.
Conditions: Heavy rainfall, leeches, muddy and slippery trails.
Hazards: Landslides and low visibility.
Not recommended due to safety and trail conditions.

Tip for staff
Kanchenjunga Mountain is situated in eastern Nepal, sharing its boundary with Sikkim, India. The third-highest peak of the world, Kanchenjunga Mountain, is one of the Major Attractions of Nepal. Every year, a large number of trekkers visit the Kanchenjunga region to witness the majestic Beauty of Mount Kanchenjunga.
The trek Duration of the Kanchenjunga Circuit is 21 days, covering approximately 220 km of walking distance. 12 to 15 km of walking per day. The terrain of the Kanchenjunga Himal trek is often rough with rocky paths and steep hills. Trekkers must have a decent fitness level to complete the trek.
The trekking difficulty of the Mount Kanchenjunga Circuit trek is moderate to hard. There are various challenges a trekker might face during the Kanchenjunga Himalaya trek. As you need to ascend to 4,785 m above the sea level, the trail gets more and more difficult as you get higher.
Yet, in such situations, proper acclimatization is crucial as the body needs proper rest and time to adjust the body according to the surroundings. Following the basic principles might change the whole outcome of your trek.
Understanding what altitude sickness is and its symptoms is very crucial as you plan for your Kanchenjunga peak trek. Altitude sickness is a condition where an individual faces difficulties while ascending quickly to a higher altitude, especially above 2,500 m.
Altitude sickness is one of the most common symptoms for trekkers. The following are some of the symptoms of altitude sickness while trekking to Mount Kanchenjunga:
The following are some of the essential tips to avoid altitude sickness:
While trekking to the Kanchenjunga Mountain Peak, you need to carry three essential permits with you: the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project (KCAP) permit, the Restricted Area Permit (RAP), and the TIMS Card.
Kanchenjunga Trek Permit:
The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area permit is a mandatory permit for the Mount Kanchenjunga Circuit trek. You can get your permit from your travel agency or from the Nepal Tourism Board office.
A Restricted Area Permit (RAP) is a special permit that foreigners visiting Nepal requires to enter the protected areas of Nepal. This permit is essential for activities like trekking or touring in various parts of Nepal.
Your tour operator can arrange the RAP permit for you or you can get one from the Tourism Board Office in Kathmandu.
The Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) Card is a trekker's carry while trekking to some of the high altitude areas of Nepal. The TIMS Card ensures the safety and security of trekkers, and controls illegal trekkings.

I first used Mohan's services back in 2022. I then returned to Nepal the following year in 23 and most recently this year I spent June-August in Pokhara. Mohan is a very jovial, friendly laid back fellow and first time we met we had an instant connection. He's mostly helped me with transport to and from Pokhara & Kathmandu, but also most recently I used one of his fine jeeps to take me to Muktinath. Also his drivers are very experienced lovely people so the journeys have been great!.
His prices are very competitive, and he's given me some nice discounts over the years so I'm grateful for that. Also whenever I've had to change my plans last minute he's been extremely flexible in accommodating my needs. I consider Mohan a friend and will continue to use his services in my future travels to Nepal.
I'd highly recommend anyone to use Mohan, whether it be for trekking or taxi services, he's well established & connected and always has a can do attitude with a smile.
Cheers Mohan 👋 😊

Great experience. Mohan helped us organise a great 7-day trek, helped also with transport to Pokhara and always answered our questions. The communication was very good and clear. Our trek was fully organised, our guide really friendly and we enjoyed every minute of it. The price was also good.

Outstanding service across multiple offerings! I initially contacted for a solo trek, which was the highlight of my trip. Hi Nepal demonstrated prompt dropoff/pickup, excellent trek guide tailored to my needs, and overall just a great experience. All with only 12 hours notice!
After some travel issues I experienced with my airplane, Hi Nepal also worked with me on a taxi all the way to Kathmandu which removed the anxiety from my situation entirely. I was picked up promptly at the time I requested, and the company stayed in contact with me to ensure all went perfectly.
10/10 - will be using them again for my next trip in Nepal!
