The Nar Phu Valley Trek is a captivating short journey situated in the Trans Himalaya, concealed behind the imposing north face of Mt. Annapurna. This trek offers a delightful blend of culture, adventure, and breathtaking scenery. Along the way, you'll encounter sky-piercing peaks, challenging mountain passes, serene glaciers, remote ancient villages, meandering rivers carving deep gorges, lush forests, intriguing rock formations, and a diverse range of wildlife, including yaks and wild goats. The trek also introduces you to Gombas and the unique Tibetan culture that has been passed down through generations. It's important to note that since this is a Restricted Area trek, special permits are necessary and can be obtained through registered trekking agencies.
The adventure begins in Koto village, departing from the well-known Annapurna Circuit. As you cross the Marsyangdi River at Koto, you'll start your journey into the secluded Nar Phu Valley. This path offers a dramatic shift away from the more heavily trafficked routes, leading you deeper into the remote Nar Phu valley. The trail meanders through narrow paths and enchanting forests, offering frequent glimpses of the majestic mountains. Along the way, you'll encounter colorful Tibetan Chortens, monasteries, captivating rock paintings, and prayer stones, all adding to the unique charm of this trek. As you continue your adventure, you'll reach Meta, Chyakhu, and Kang, where the remnants of buildings serve as reminders of the 1960s Khampa revolution of Tibetan rebels. There are also side trips from Phu Village, where you can explore the Tashi Khaling Gumba, the Himlung Himal Base Camp (4,920m), and the sacred Damodar Kunda trail. If weather conditions permit, adventurous trekkers can take a direct route from Phu to Nar village, involving the challenging Phu Pass (5,050m) and Nar Pass (5,400m). The journey then retraces its steps to Meta village, offering the opportunity to visit the Kangaru Himal Base Camp (4,500m) before ascending the Kanga La Pass (5,320m) via Nar Phedi and Nar Village. The view from Kang La Pass is nothing short of breathtaking, with a 360-degree panorama of the Annapurna Range, Chulu Range, Himlung Himal (7,176m), Kangaru Himal (6,981m), and Lamjung Himal (6,983m). Finally, the Kang La Pass Short Trek concludes in Chame, where you rejoin the main trail of the Annapurna Circuit via Ngawal (3,675m). From there, you can either drive back to Besisahar and continue to your destination or opt for a direct Jeep ride from Ngawal to Besisahar, which takes about 10 hours.
